The southern island province of Phuket is ready for the annual grand “Phuket Vegetarian Festival” scheduled from 18 to 26 October 2009. The event this year has an emphasis on local cultures of Phuket people.

Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob said the renowned vegetarian festival had been held in the province annually for more than 100 years. He said the event this year would be grander than last year and it would focus on local cultures exhibited through food, dresses, and festival decorations.

The Governor said the festival normally took place during high season of the province and expected there would be more tourists from China, Malaysia, Singapore, and other countries as well as domestic tourists participating in the event.

To ensure safety for the visitors, the Governor said the province would impose stringent measures to control the use of fireworks and ritual tools used by “Ma Song”–entranced devotees of Chinese shrines and temples. The Governor added that prices of products in the province would also be closely monitored.
