World’s number two tennis player Rafael Nadal has abruptly withdrawn from the 2009 PTT Thailand Open due to an acute injury of his right abdominal muscle.

According to Thailand Lawn Tennis Association President Suwat Liptapanlop, Mr Nadal has submitted a medical certificate to 2009 PTT Thailand Open tournament organizers. The seven-centimeter muscle rupture of the Spanish tennis player is confirmed by ultrasound and requires a rest period of two weeks.

However, other leading tennis players have confirmed to take part in the tournament. Important figures include world’s number seven Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, world’s number ten Gilles Simon and former world’s number one Marat Safin.
