The atmosphere of the vegetarian festival in the southern island of Phuket is starting to get livelier with vegetarian food preparation and decorations in shrines, tourists spots and many parts of Phuket city.

Many important shrines have started to decorate their premises with yellow flags symbolizing the celebration of the vegetarian festival while preparing to cater vegetarian food. The Phuket Municipal authorities have also beautified the city with lanterns and yellow flags. Advertising signs have been set up to invite locals and tourists to take part in the event.

Many food shops and stalls located near shrines have begun to sell vegetarian food. Meanwhile, Phuket Governor, Wichai Praisa-ngob has tasked authorities to inspect the sales of fireworks to prevent potential accidents.

The vegetarian festival will run from 18 to 26 October 2009 and is practiced nationwide mostly by Chinese descendants. Phuket has been very famous for the festival celebration. The annual festival will feature the procession of religious devotees called ‘Ma-Song’.
