Bangkok to arrange grand Loy Krathong celebration this year

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), will arrange a grand celebration of Loy Krathong Festival this year under the theme of ‘The Vibrancy of the City with Tide of Color’ .

According to Deputy Bangkok Governor Taya Teepsuwan, the celebration will take place from 31 October to 2 November 2009 from 17.00 to 21.30 hrs at the Rama VIII Suan Luang Park located under the Rama VIII Bridge. The event will feature exhibitions on the history and popularity of the festival in each region of the Kingdom and stalls selling top-notch foods and products from each district in Bangkok. There will also be demonstrations on how to make floating baskets or “krathong,” Thai cultural performances, and mini concerts from Thai singers.

Other highlights of the celebration are a beauty pageant or “Nang Nopphamat” queen contest and a krathong-making competition on the last day of the event. A procession of 14 boats decorated with light bulbs will pass the Krungthep and Krungthon Bridges over the Chao Phraya River from 18.00 to 20.00 hrs on 2 November.
