A new fertile coral reef has been discovered off Pha Island, 10 kms from Kho Khao Island, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province.

Mr Paitoon Panchaiyabhum, Director of the Center of Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation 5 (Phuket), Department of Marine and Coastal Resource (DMCR) said the center had assigned staff to thoroughly inspect the reef which was discovered by Phang Nga divers. The reef, which was 1-2 sq km in size, was found virtually untouched at a depth of 10-25 meters with a variety of reef species growing, especially the Anemone coral.

Recently, Phang Nga tourism business entrepreneurs, DMCR and the Department of Fishery held the “Nemo Return” project on the area of the newly discovered coral reef. The Department aims to promote the coral reef as a new tourist attraction. (NNT)
