The first day of registration under the informal debt-refinancing program saw more than 17,000 people signing up in various parts of the country.

The headquarters of the Government Savings Bank was crowded this morning as today is the first day of registration for the government’s informal debt restructuring scheme. Nakhon Ratchasima and Pichit are two top provinces with the highest number of registrants.

Finance Minister, Korn Chatikavanij, invited the people with informal debt problems to sign up for assistance. The scheme aims to relieve low-income people from high-interest unconventional loans by offering a refinance program with government banks.

The registration is open from 1 to 31 December 2009, 08.30-16.30 hrs daily except Sundays and national holidays at all branches of the Government Savings Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives. (NNT)
