    Silom Road closes for stint as walking street; 55 shops participate

    A stretch of Silom Road, in the heart of the Thai capital’s business district, is closed to traffic Sunday from 10am to midnight to allow people to freely wander and shop in the area.

    More than 100,000 people are expected to roam the usually busy road as the stretch of it between the Sala Daeng intersection in front of the Dusit Thani Hotel and Narathiwat Rajanakarin intersection closed to traffic during the period for a distance of two kilometres. (More …)

    The 2009 Laguna Phuket Triathlon will be held on 6 December.

    The Laguna Phuket Triathlon includes a 1,800 meter swim, a 55 kilometer bike ride and a 12 kilometer run that will cut through a golf course. This year the national carrier Thai Airways International offers special fares for the athletes. (More …)

    The government will organize activities along Ratchadamnoen road under the theme “Thai People’s Street of Happiness” from 3-7 December in honor of His Majesty the King’s 82nd birthday this year.

    The event is headed by the Finance Ministry. Nine activities include performances on three main stages in front of Mahakan Fort, the Democracy Monument, and the Government Lottery Office Headquarters. The opening ceremony on 3 December will be presided over by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in front of Mahakan Fort. Highlights of the celebration will be 28 processions of light-decorated vehicles with Thai famous actresses and fountain shows with royal compositions. (More …)

    Kanchanaburi holds The Bridge over the River Khwae Week 2009 

    Kanchanaburi province will hold The Bridge over the River Khwae and the Thai Red Cross Week 2009 during 27 November to 8 December, in remembrance of the historical incidents.

    The Governor of Kanchanaburi Province, Ruengsak Mahavinijchaimontri, announced the annual event The Bridge over the River Khwae and the Thai Red Cross Week 2009. The event was to commemorate the historical incidents over the bridge during World War II and to raise the awareness among the new generations.

    The activities in the event comprise traditional performances reflecting the old lifestyles, the beauty contest, and the realistic historical demonstration. In addition, on 5 December, an exhibition will be put up on the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne in order to disseminate HM’s activities for the people, with a candle – lit blessing ceremony for HM the King.     Phuket´s room reservations hit 80% after festive season 

    The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reveals the accommodation occupancy rate in Phuket after Christmas holiday is still as high as 80%.

    Director of TAT Phuket, Ms Bang-onrat Chinaprayoon said that according to hotel and tour operators, room reservations in Phuket during the high season are on the rise and the occupancy rate has climbed up to 80% after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

    Ms Bang-onrat added that Phuket is ready to deal with increasing number of visitors. Once the tourists have checked in, they can conveniently travel around the city, join adventurous activities, go diving and try other recreational programs. Travelling to nearby provinces like Phang-nga and other Andaman cities is also convenient. She believed that the variety of activities on offer would encourage the tourists to stay longer. (NNT)

    Thailand’s tourism has rebounded with an increasing number of tourists of 9.8 million from January to September, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Chumphol Silpa-archa.

    The minister said a number of passengers arriving at the Suvharnabhumi Airport averaged 30,000 people per day in October. It is forecast that in December, the number of tourists for the whole year will be close or even exceed the targeted 14 million. (More …)

    The Mae Klong Banana Leaf Krathong tradition in Amphawa district of Samut Songkhram has joined in with the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) seven officially sponsored Loy Krathong celebrations this year.

    The Mae Klong Banana Leaf Krathong festival in Samut Songkhram is the province’s annual celebration of the Loy Kratong holiday. The event will feature not only the floating of krathongs or floating baskets constructed with eco-friendly banana leaves but will also have activities showcasing the many traditions of communities along the Mae Klong River.
