    Thailand to lose Bt3-4 billion revenue from AFTA tariff cuts 

    import and export duties

    Thailand’s Customs Department expects revenue from import and export duties will decline by Bt3-4 billon (US$90-120 million) in the wake of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) cuts which became effective on January 1, with the department adjusting its role from tariff collector to facilitator, a senior customs official said on Friday.     UK interests financial services in Thailand

    The United Kingdom has shown interest in investing in Thailand‘s financial service as satisfactory figures on export and tourism sectors have been reported.

    Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, along with Lord Charles Powell of Bayswater and Mr Quinton Quayle, British Ambassador to Thailand, discussed economic issues in Thailand and the UK and deemed that both countries are going through a good recovery.

    Mr Abhisit stated that the government has expressed interest to promote the investment of Thailand by establishing the One Start One Stop (OSOS) investment center to facilitate and provide investment services to all investors in Thailand. (More …)

    Gems and jewelry market to flourish in China next year

    The Chinese market is anticipated to turn positive next year, while the gems and jewelry market will be positively affected, according to Phaichit Viboontanasarn, the commercial counsellor of Department of Export Promotion in Shanghai, China.

    The commercial counselor in Shanghai viewed that an apparent improvement in the Chinese economy resulted from strong purchasing power which mainly helped the Chinese economy remain in a secure zone. He added that the gems and jewelry market would be prioritized for Chinese export, anticipating that the said products would be mass exported by next year. (More …)

    DEP pushes international education to the next level 

    The Department of Export Promotion (DEP), Ministry of Commerce, is pushing Thailand to be Asia’s hub of international education services by hosting the Thailand International Education Exhibition.

    “Asia’s hub of International Education”, is the theme of this year’s Thailand International Education Exhibition (TIEE 2009) and it is Thailand’s aim for the future as the government aims for the nation’s education to be the best in the region. (More …)
