    Thailand to lose Bt3-4 billion revenue from AFTA tariff cuts 

    import and export duties

    Thailand’s Customs Department expects revenue from import and export duties will decline by Bt3-4 billon (US$90-120 million) in the wake of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) cuts which became effective on January 1, with the department adjusting its role from tariff collector to facilitator, a senior customs official said on Friday.     Buriram and Chiang Rai to be promoted as border trading points 

    The Thai Chamber of Commerce is encouraging Chiang Mai and Buriram to open border trading points to promote trade and investment with Myanmar and Cambodia respectively.

    The Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Mr Dusit Nontanakorn, today met with the provincial Chamber of Commerce of Buriram to discuss ways to promote trade and investment in the region.

    They also discussed the organizational development and information exchange between the Thai Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok and other regions. (More …)

    Trat to verify alien workers in bid to curb crime 

    Trat (See Trat Hotels) province has urged employers of Myanmar and Cambodian alien laborers to verify their employees’ nationality before 23 February 2010.

    Trat (See Trat Hotels) Employment Provincial Official, Vipa Yoochai, said the nationality verification would give migrant laborers a legal alien worker status which would bestow them the rights to reside and work in Thailand (See Thailand Hotels) .     Stateless boy nets 3rd place in origami aircraft competition

    The stateless boy representing Thailand in a paper plane flight competition, Mong Thongdee, netted a third place in his solo event after winning the team event on Saturday.

    Mong, the 12-year-old boy from the northern province of Chiang Mai, attending the international paper airplane flying contest in Japan’s Chiba is scheduled to return home on Monday. (More …)

    Sangkhla Buri District in Thailand’s western province of Karnchanaburi, bordering Myanmar, has its own charm and plenty of picturesque scenery. It is also a land of 3 cultures – Thai, Mon and Karen – and has now become a must-see destination.

    In 1984, the construction of Khao Laem Reservoir inundated the old Sangkhla Buri. The old temple can still be seen when the tide recedes around March and April.

    The rebuilt district is located 340 km northwest of Bangkok. It is also home to a number of ethnic groups. The longest wooden bridge in Thailand at 850 metres, the “Mon Bridge”, takes visitors to the Mon Village. (More …)

    Stateless boy may not join origami contest in Japan

    A Myanmar boy has not yet been able to obtain official permission from the Thai government to participate in an origami competition in Japan.

    Mong Thongdee was born in Thailand to Myanmar migrant labourers. He was denied Thai citizenship since his parents are Myanmar migrants.

    The boy, who has been studying in a primary school in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai, won the national paper airplane contest and was invited to compete in Japan’s Origami Plane Association competition from September 19-20. (More …)
