    King asks Thais to work for common interest

    Thailand’s revered and beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej has asked his subjects to work with utmost efficiency and for the benefit of the public interest.

    King Bhumibol, who has been hospitalised at Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital since September 19, initially with a lung infection and fever, said in his New Year message televised late Thursday that Thais who love their country should dedicate themselves to carrying out the tasks they have before them to the best of their ability.     70 year-old Taiwanese nursing scholar received the 2008 Princess Srinagarindra Award 

    Professor Dr.Yu-Mei Yu Chao, a professional nursing scholar from Taiwan received the 2008 Princess Srinagarindra Award for her significant contribution to nursing and public health.

    Professor Dr.Yu-Mei Yu Chao spoke after the ceremony, that it had been such an honor receiving the award from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at the Grand Palace. Her research on Multiple Myeloma in adolescents was conducted to find out that the lack of health insurance in the past caused deaths from Multiple Myeloma in children.     Tourism and Sports: Railway strike affects tourism

    The Tourism and Sports minister admits the current railway strike is impacting tourism, believing the problem will end in 2 days.

    Minister of Tourism and Sports Chumpol Silpa-archa assured that the strike would be resolved soon because Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Transport Minister Sopon Zarum were capable of handling the problem. The minister expressed his belief that the railway strike was not politically motivated and it was only an internal affair of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). (More …)

    Over the past several decades, Bangkok’s historic plaza Sanam Luang has witnessed Thailand’s major political changes. It also serves as venue for royal ceremonies and entertainment for the public. And in the time of an economic slump, Sanam Luang has also become a shelter for hundreds of homeless people. The city’s plaza means much more for many lives.

    Against the magnificent backdrop of the illuminated Wat Phra Kaew and Grand Palace, a great number of homeless and displaced hit the sacks around Sanam Luang night after night. (More …)
