    Airport Rail Link set to be in service mid-2010

    The 28-kilometre Airport Rail Link connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport with the city centre will be fully operational within the next six months, mid-2010, at the latest, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday.

    Speaking after presiding over a special test run of the Airport Rail Link with members of his cabinet, Mr Abhisit said his transport minister Sophon Zarum has given assurances that the Airport Rail Link’s commercial service could be in operation as early as March or mid-2010 at latest.     Tourism and Sports: Railway strike affects tourism

    The Tourism and Sports minister admits the current railway strike is impacting tourism, believing the problem will end in 2 days.

    Minister of Tourism and Sports Chumpol Silpa-archa assured that the strike would be resolved soon because Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Transport Minister Sopon Zarum were capable of handling the problem. The minister expressed his belief that the railway strike was not politically motivated and it was only an internal affair of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). (More …)

    Day-long train trips from Bangkok to tourist destinations

    The State Railway of  Thailand (SRT) has teamed up with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and related agencies to offer economical day-long train trips from Bangkok to tourist destinations in three neighbouring provinces over the next three months.

    On August 15, 22 and 29, there will be special trains departing Bangkok taking travellers to Chachoengsao and back the same days; on September 5, 12, 19 and 26, similar service is available to Saraburi; and to Lop Buri on October 3, 10, 14, 24 and 31.

    Tickets, priced at 999 baht per person on all routes, cover train travel by third class, food, transportation, tour guide, insurance fees and admission to various attractions on the itinerary. (More …)

    Sangkhla Buri District in Thailand’s western province of Karnchanaburi, bordering Myanmar, has its own charm and plenty of picturesque scenery. It is also a land of 3 cultures – Thai, Mon and Karen – and has now become a must-see destination.

    In 1984, the construction of Khao Laem Reservoir inundated the old Sangkhla Buri. The old temple can still be seen when the tide recedes around March and April.

    The rebuilt district is located 340 km northwest of Bangkok. It is also home to a number of ethnic groups. The longest wooden bridge in Thailand at 850 metres, the “Mon Bridge”, takes visitors to the Mon Village. (More …)
