    THAI to send rice to help Haitian quake victims

    National airline Thai Airways International (THAI) will start transporting the first batch of 100 tonnes of rice to earthquake-hit Haiti on February 1, Thai Airways President Piyasvasti Amranand announced.

    The company will arrange a special flight to carry Thai rice donated by the Thai government to the Dominican Republic where a United Nations (UN) centre has been set up to gather aid supplies and donations for earthquake victims. (More …)

    The Thai government and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are in cooperation to hold the World Food Day event in Nan province to increase awareness on food sufficiency and to alleviate hunger among Nan residents.

    Each year the World Food Day event is scheduled to take place at different provinces throughout the country, to promote the collaboration with the community, said Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Dr Sakchai Sriboonsue. The event will be held at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL) under the theme “Achieving food security in time of crisis”. (More …)

    The United Nations Environmental Programme (Unep) has designated 2010 as the Year of Biodiversity. The organisation, together with Bayer, invites children between the ages of 6 and 14 to enter the 19th International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment.

    This year’s subject is “Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature“. Global and regional winners will be awarded prize-money and other prizes, including a trip to the official award ceremony together with a chaperone. (More …)
