    Economy moving downtrend / Suan Dusit Poll

    The majority respondents of a survey conducted by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University agreed that the country’s economy is worsening.

    The Suan Dusit poll was conducted among 1,327 people from Dec 1 to 3 on their viewpoints towards their confidence in economic recovery. The poll showed that the majority of the respondents or 71.43% said the country’s economy was moving downward. 56.55% stated that the household expenses were rising and 49.70% said they held the same income.     New campaign brings researchers and entrepreneurs together 

    Technology Management Center (TMC) announces the Lab to Market (L2M) project to support the conversion of technological ideas into products.

    Ms Chachanart Thebtaranonth, Executive Director of TMC, said that most of the ideas and inventions created reached a dead end when the research was finished to a certain point. This project will help create funds from our ideas to further fuel our research. (More …)

    Laws and regulations prohibiting or impeding attempts to smoke are perceived and recommended as effective measures by the majority of respondents, according to a recent survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll of Rajabhat Suan Dusit University.

    The opinion survey about the anti-smoking campaign was conducted among 1,324 people from 5 to 8 October 2009. Smokers on average will smoke 7-10 cigarettes a day. Top reasons for smoking range from stress, to experimentation, peer pressure and the need to express masculinity. (More …)

    By selling an array of virtual products from avatar clothes to e-furniture, Asia’s social networking sites appear to have solved the conundrum of how to leverage big profits from their extensive user bases.

    It’s simple, they say, the money might be virtual but the profits are all too real.

    Chinese university student Tan Shengrong spends about 20 yuan ($2.90) per month purchasing outfits for her pet penguin avatar or playing games on QQ, an instant message portal on Qzone, China’s most popular social networking site.

    It might not seem like a hefty sum, but every fen, or cent, is money in the bank for Tencent Holdings, which owns Qzone and saw an 85 percent increase in its second quarter net profit this year compared to 2008 despite the economic downturn.

    “They keep growing even though the economy’s bad because they keep making millions from cents from millions and millions of people,” said Benjamin Joffe, head of Internet consulting firm Plus Eight Star. (More …)

    Lecturer of the Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University Asst.Prof.Dr.Nongnuch Soontornwetchakarn revealed that a survey on the working status of the Thai population in 2008 found that 37.9% of people who were 60 years and older, still worked.

    Meanwhile 77% of senior people, who had not worked already, did not want to work or could not work, while the rest were jobless and looking for a job. (More …)

    Jurin earnest to upgrade Thai universities to world’s top ranking

    Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has planned to propel more Thai universities to be enlisted in the World’s Top 500 Universities and to provide 12 billion baht for driving forward the National Research University Project.

    Mr Jurin yesterday chaired an MOU signing ceremony between the Office of the Higher Education Commission and the rectors of 9 universities that had been selected as the National Research Universities. During his speech in the ceremony, he encouraged the university heads and the people working in the academic field to help develop the educational quality of the country. (More …)
