    Venue : River Kwai Bridge, Mueang District, Kanchanaburi

    Each year in late November to early December, the world famous River Kwai Bridge built by Allied prisoners-of-war during World War II, becomes the focal point of celebrations.

    Event highlights include historical and archaeological exhibits, a carnival, folk and cultural performances, rides on World War II vintage trains, and a spectacular light and sound presentation re-enacting the bridge’s World War II legacy.

    Watch the light-and-sound show in remembrance of the bridge and the construction of the “Death Railway” during World War II

    (There are 4 sets of headphones available in English, Japanese, Chinese and German). A wealth of entertainment and Exhibitions are on display. (TAT)

    Kanchanaburi prepares for River Khwae Week

    Kanchanaburi Province in the West prepares to celebrate the annual River Khwae Week.

    Highlights of the event include historical and archaeological exhibits, a carnival, folk and cultural performances, rides on World War II vintage trains and light and sound presentations to reenact the bridge’s World War II experience.

    A light and sound show will commemorate the historical bridge and the “Death Railway” construction. Headphones will be available for narrations in English, Japanese, Chinese and German.

    Thai Day of Peace, the Day against Wars

    Thai Day of Peace is the day to commemorate the bravery of the Free Thai Movement Network or “Seri Thai” led by Thai political activist and intellect Pridi Banomyong during the 2nd World War.

    Earlier, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, then Prime Minister had signed an agreement with Japan and the Axis to make a war declaration against the US, the Great Britain, and the Allies on 25 January 1942. The Thai Government was obligated by the agreement to allow Japanese troops to march through the country and used military bases in Thailand to strike the Allies’ possessions in the region. Disagreeing with the Thai Government’s decisions, Mr Pridi built up the anti-Japanese underground Free Thai Movement Network in Thailand to establish contact with the Allies. The network secretly opposed the Thai Government under the leadership of Field Marshal Plaek and Japan’s movements in Thailand. (More …)
